Wow - it's been a busy week!
I stopped at Save-On-Foods in Victoria BC for dish soap and hot chocolate (the two had nothing to do with each other), and signed copies of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Think Possible, which includes my story 'Taking Aim at Excuses.' Lionel the store manager was kind enough to help me out, and so on a cart of toys, with my dish soap and hot chocolate at my side, I signed the copies they had then made my way to the checkout!
Then I made my way over to Pharmasave in Broadmead Shopping Center, where I also signed copies of the book - and they even set up a little display table to showcase it all! What a thrill! Check them out on Facebook :)
Thanks to all the local business for supporting local writers! XO

Here, there and everywhere - catching up!
Wow - I've been so busy the last while; here, there and everywhere! If it's not work, then it's dealing with some personal matters that are soon to be on the mend! I've been writing, just unfortunately not here - so much has been going on! I'm working on a fantasy for teens, have been writing for Chicken Soup for the Soul, and have a book to be released this month by Evernight Teen which has required lots of prepping, planning and excitement. I hope you'll stop by my website for young adults at www.lisamcmanus.com
In the meantime, I have been reflecting on how fortunate I am to do what I do, and that is write AND have someone read my work AND like it enough to include it in an anthology of fabulous authors I am humbled to be in the company of. Chicken Soup for the Soul's latest release 'Think Possible' is full of 101 stories by authors who overcame challenges and adversity in various degrees to turn what they thought IMpossible into something possible. I have been fortunate to have previous work published by the fabulous folks at Chicken Soup for the Soul; the opportunities and experiences that have come with being published with them, and many other publishers who have seen something of interest in what I do, are countless. So it's a thrill when you're shopping at Costco filling your shopping cart of warehouse-size groceries for your family and you see copies of the book your work is in for sale - very cool.
Happy reading!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Think Possible - new release!
I've been away from here for a bit - life had gotten in the way of my writing. Or, I realize upon much-needed reflection, I allowed life to get in the way of my writing. Bad me.
I allowed challenges to get in the way - but at the same time I had to, unfortunately, 'let things go' in order to keep up with some of those all-consuming challenges. But as the dark clouds have finally started to lift - despite it being fall and rainy season upon us (hee, hee - I made a joke!) - good things ARE starting to happen once again...
My story 'Taking Aim at Excuses' is along with many other stories in the newest release 'Chicken Soup for the Soul: Think Possible.' The book is full of 101 stories about possibilities and doing (at least often what one might have thought) the unthinkable - the unimaginable - despite adversity, challenges, roadblocks or...ourselves. Sometimes life throws us life-altering challenges that are out of our control and we have to work with what we've got. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy, perspective hard to come by. Either way, no matter what the reason, doing what we can with what we've got and coming out bigger, stronger, tougher and better than what we were in the beginning is what really counts.
My story about archery that I am proud to have in this inspirational book has been published at the other side of a challenging time in my life. This story I wrote reminded me that no matter what clouds may hover, I have to keep shooting, take aim at excuses, and keep perspective. I should practice what I preach.
Now to be not so hum-drum and glum:
Something cool with this release - I participated in a 'Twitter Party' with publisher Amy Newmark and co-author, Deborah Norville of the syndicated show, Inside Edition (on which she had a segment about the book but I missed it!). Anyways, the 'party' lasted for an hour, and Amy, Deborah, other authors from the book twitter-chatted about the book. If you're on twitter go to #CSSThinkPossible to see our chat, or find me at @LisaMcManusLang
I hope you find the book a help to you and remember - anything's possible.
(Coach Bradley helping me shoot a bow for the first time - he's mentioned in my story :) )
Thank you all for reading - hope you'll come back soon!

Lovin' When the Postman Rings - Even Once
I know in this politically correct world 'postman' should be 'postwoman' or 'postperson' but for the sake of the movie's name, 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' (1946), and even though this post and its content really have nothing to do with the movie or ITS content, I chose to stick with postMAN. (Basic movie plot for the curious - A married woman and a drifter fall in love, then plot to murder her husband... but even once the deed is done, they must live with the consequences of their actions.)
Anyways, I love it when he/she comes a'ringin' bringing me mail - specifically a box.
And more specifically a box from publishers/distributors Simon and Schuster containing my author copies of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul: Reboot Your Life.'
The book features my story, 'My Writing Roller Coaster' in which I talk about the twists and turns my writing career has taken and how I got it back on track - and staying there! There were no murders involved to do so (see above-mentioned story plot - See? completely unrelated).
On sale September 16!!!
Thanks for stopping by!

Giveaway! National Book Lover's Day - I Missed It!
Saturday August 9, 2014 was National Book Lover’s day – and I completely missed it!
Me, the writer and bibliophile, almost missed a MOST important day because....I was making pickles.
Pickles and books have nothing to do with each other – other than if you lounge around with a book good and a bowl full of pickles. But I was so caught up in the boiling, sterilizing, chopping and preserving of the tiny cucumbers that the day – the REAL significance of the day – just slipped right by me. It wasn’t until much later when my eyes stopped stinging from all the vinegar I had to use that I realized....OH! I missed a VERY important day!
So to celebrate – a one day holdover – I’m giving away a copy of the upcoming Chicken Soup for the Soul book, ‘The Cat Did What?’ Inside are 101 funny, heartwarming and outrageous stories about those felines who often drive their owners crazy. Two of my stories are featured, including ‘ Indoor Hunter’ and ‘I Came Home for This?’ For you country music fans, the book also includes a foreword by awarding winning country star, Miranda Lambert!
Just leave a comment – anything you want – and I’ll draw a name out of a hat. Don’t forget to sign your full name with your comment! The giveaway runs from Sunday August 10, 2014, 12:01am (PST) to Sunday August 10, 2014, to 11:59pm (PST). Be sure to check back on Monday August 11, 2014 to see if you won!! Good luck!
Happy reading to everyone, be sure to support an author, and for those who pickle – happy preserving!

Book Release!
May 22, 2012 was the release date for four books in a news series by Chicken Soup for the Soul in collaboration with Harvard Medical School. Focusing on a single topic of health, each book has related stories by folks like you and me who overcame various health challenges, as well as medical advice from esteemed Harvard Medical School professionals.
• Chicken Soup for the Soul: Boost Your Brain Power! by top neurologist Dr. Marie Pasinski, with Liz Neporent (ISBN 978-1-935096-86-3)
• Chicken Soup for the Soul: Say Goodbye to Back Pain! by leading physical medicine expert Dr. Julie Silver, who is also Harvard Health Publications Chief Editor of Books (ISBN 978-1-935096-87-0)
• Chicken Soup for the Soul: Say Goodbye to Stress! by noted psychologist Dr. Jeff Brown, with Liz Neporent (ISBN 978-1-935096-88-7)
• Chicken Soup for the Soul: Say Hello to a Better Body! by respected internist Dr. Suzanne Koven (ISBN 978-1-935096-89-4)
In ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul: Say Goodbye to Stress!’ my story ‘Power Walk,’ shows how I let stress resulting from a very difficult time in my life rob me of sleep, my positive mood, and time for myself, thereby giving it power. I learned to religiously get out there and walk off the stress, no matter what was happening or how I felt, and walk off all my worries with every step.
Be sure to check out these fabulous inspirational books, and curl up with a bowl of soup – and feel better!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Say Goodbye to Stress
On my doorstep the other day was a box! The box I had been waiting for!
I had been waiting so long for this box, since somewhere around November, and it was really starting to stress me out (even though I knew it wouldn’t come until around now, anyways, but that’s beside the point).
I hate waiting; I’m really bad at it. It consumes me and I become obsessed by it, almost to the point of getting completely stressed out. Even if it’s for something good, the waiting almost kills me.
And it’s funny, really, when I think about it, how stressed out from waiting I actually got, given the contents of the box.
I was stressfully waiting for my author copies of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul: Say Goodbye to Stress,’ which contains my story, ‘Power Walk.’
I am not making light of stress; I know it is nothing to joke about it. As I write in my story, ‘Power Walk,’ stress resulting from a very difficult time in my life robbed me of my sleep, my positive mood, and time for myself. Letting stress do this only gave it power. My story shows how I learned to religiously get out there, no matter what was happening or how I felt, and walk off the stress – pound all my worries away with every step.
The book has 26 personal stories of how folks like me dealt with stress resulting from various situations like money, health, over multi-tasking, and life’s inevitable ups and downs. Dr. Jeff Brown of Harvard Medical School contributes medical advice and facts about stress and its affects on health, and in a down-to-earth, easy-to-read manner, he helps readers find ways to get through those stressful times (there’s even a recipe!).
‘Chicken Soup for the Soul; Say Goodbye to Stress’ in bookstores on May 22, 2012, aims to live up to its title and help you say goodbye to stress.
Back to my books…
So I displayed my copies of books, denying any family member of touching them (oh alright, I DID let them read my story in print, BUT I held the book for them).
With the book about relieving stress finally in my hands, I can now say goodbye to stress.

Not So Famous...and Happy for It
Since the release of the book ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness’ which contains two of my stories, I have been busy being famous – or not.
True, the book is not a full-length novel bearing my name in raised, gold lettering. And true, I am ‘just’ a contributor in the anthology. But in my up-and-coming writing world, this is BIG. As I waited for the day to arrive when the book (as given to contributors upon story acceptance) would be in my hand, seeing my words in black and white, I wondered: would anything change?
I wondered if I would look different with this new-found ‘fame.’ Nope - I still had to use a ½ a tube of under-eye cream everyday to combat the puffiness. I still had to do my own hair and makeup – no one was coming to do it for me.
I wondered if people would recognize me and cry out, “HEY! There’s that famous Chicken Soup for the Soul girl!” as I sauntered down the street in my power suit, Coach™ bag and fancy hair. Considering my picture is not in the book, I own neither a power suit nor a Coach bag (but I have a Coach wallet, courtesy of Mom), and I still have the same hair from 1989, I am still just another person walking down the street.
I wondered if my new-found fame would instantly release my demure, mature, professional side that should have come out long ago. I recently all but fell to the floor writhing in joy when my sister gave me three packages of Purdy’s Sweet Georgia Browns – each package containing two of the chocolate, caramel and pecan delights. I ate them in two days. Actually, in one-and-a-half days. And I didn’t share. So much for maturity.
During the week the book was released, I would stalk the bookstores, waiting to see ‘my’ book on the shelves. When they did arrive, I danced/skipped in the aisle (truly), and stared in amazement at my name in ink. I fantasized about spreading a few books on the floor of the bookstore and frolicking in joy. So much for professionalism.
Since none of these ‘famous’ things happened, I reverted to basking in my own literary joy.
After the books were in the stores for a week, I built up the nerve to go sign some books. Me, Lisa, doing that – who woulda thought?
I had no idea what to expect, never mind having no idea of how it was done. So…I just did it.
I spoke to the manager of the first bookstore, and she resoundingly said YES to my offer to sign books. After bumbling like an idiot (me, not her), she told me to get the books from the shelf, and go to the corner to sign them. It took great effort to sign normally with shaking hands, all the while acting cool and calm, as if I do that sort of thing every day.
Done signing, I wondered what to do next. So I took the books back on the shelf - FACE OUT - and left the store.
No trumpets sounded; no red carpet was rolled. Oh – okay then. That’s all there is to it, I guess. But I wasn’t disappointed. I giggled and skipped my way down the street, proud of what I had just done.
The next day, feeling brave and confident, I stopped at the next store.
I approached the manager and he, along with his co-worker, was quite thrilled with the whole thing. “We just had Adrienne Clarkson (former Governor-General of Canada) here last week signing her book, and now you’re here!”
My GOD, I thought, I am being used in the same sentence as Adrienne Clarkson.
They asked me about writing, one of them blushed, they collected the books for me to sign, they wouldn’t let me put the books back….it went on.
At the risk of sounding like my head had swelled bigger than the bookstore, read on….
A week later I was reminded of WHY I write – not for fame, money, or a new Coach bag (well, maybe). On the Chicken Soup for the Soul® website, readers can subscribe to have a Chicken Soup story, randomly picked from their countless books, sent to their email. One of my stories from ‘my’ book was picked.
The next day, my elation at this honour still having me in whirlwind, I received an email from a Chicken Soup story subscriber. She made the effort to track down my email address to tell me she had read the story, was touched, and to keep writing.
And THAT is why I write. Forget about fame....

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness
This was what was on my door one autumn Tuesday afternoon from Canpar Delivery. Most interesting to note, of course, was who the boxes were from – SIMON AND SCHUSTER (book distributor). Note also, if you can, my explicit instructions of where to leave the (most waited for, highly anticipated, treasured) boxes. My note to the delivery guy said "Please leave just under the hose by door."
Hmmm……..the excitement was building.
The next day….
This was what my door looked like with boxes from Simon and Schuster sitting in front….the delivery guy followed my instructions. Note the hose; he followed my explicit instructions. I like that delivery guy.
This is what 40 copies of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness’ look like. They were in the boxes.
Never before have books been so photographed…I have lots more pictures if you want to see…….
This is an artfully arranged display of the books, ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness’ (yes, I am plugging the book).
Why the boxes, books and pictures?
Two of my stories are featured in ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness’ (ISBN: 978-1-935096-77-1, Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, LLC), story #31 – A Real Turnaround and story #85 – How I Talked My Way to Happiness.
There are no pictures of me with the books on the day they arrived. I looked awful from not getting any sleep the night before – I was waiting for the delivery guy to come back with my boxes.
Which was dumb of me, as it wasn't like he was gonna come back at 3:00 o’clock in the morning.
I was a tad excited, to say the least.
